Japanese imperial couple visits Prinses Máxima Centrum with ARMONIA
On Friday 19 June 2026, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan, together with King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, visited the Prinses Máxima Centrum in Utrecht. This was part of the Japanese imperial couple’s three-day state visit to the Netherlands.
During their visit, both royal couples spoke with patients and learned more about Dutch-Japanese cooperation and the role of international clinical studies in tackling childhood cancer. The programme included round table talks and a tour of the centre.
ARMONIA was responsible for security during this special visit. Preparation for a day like this starts weeks in advance. The team leader, client and police discuss plans, routes are agreed and an extensive security plan is drawn up. The visit of two royal families, with a Japanese delegation of almost seventy people—including photographers, escorts, interpreters and security guards—created additional logistical challenges, because some protocols and customs differ from those in the Netherlands.
Thanks to thorough preparation and attention to detail by the team, everything ran smoothly and safely, much to the satisfaction of the patients, their families and the centre. It was an exceptional moment, and the team can be truly proud of the result.
