To mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we interviewed Patricia, who has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and has worked as a receptionist at Armonia for nearly a year. After spending many months looking for a job, this young woman shares her professional experience and the barriers she has encountered along the way.
How would you describe yourself?
My name is Patricia and I am 23 years old. I really enjoy playing football, swimming and spending time with my friends. I consider myself to be a kind, straightforward, responsible, direct and honest person.
Despite being diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, I work at two law firms, one in the morning and another in the afternoon, both of which have positions reserved for people with disabilities. In the mornings, I work at a family-run law firm and in the afternoons at another firm through Armonia, after spending one year looking for a job.
What barriers can a person with a disability face when looking for employment?
A lack of understanding on the part of employers about the “disability” a potential candidate may have, stereotyping different “disabilities”, and discrimination during recruitment processes compared with other candidates who, simply because they do not have a disability, may be prioritised even when they do not have a better CV.
What has working at Armonia meant to you?
Thanks to Armonia, I have learned how the reception area of a large firm of lawyers, economists and engineers operates. I have also had the opportunity to meet a wide variety of people and to see first-hand that there are companies that genuinely care about people with disabilities.
What would you highlight most about your day-to-day work?
What I enjoy most about my daily routine is having the opportunity to experience two different workplaces and feeling that I am needed in both.
What advice would you give to someone with a disability who is looking for a job?
I would tell them not to give up on their search, because there are always companies interested in profiles of people with disabilities. I would also encourage them to research companies that are looking for this type of profile and apply for those recruitment processes.
